Happy Memorial Day! (Weekend Project #1)

Hello, people of the internet!
This is my very first blog post (obviously, I know that's what you're thinking :) ) and it just so happens to come on one of my favorite holidays! Before I dig into all of the shenanigans that my wild bunch and I got into this weekend, I just want to take a moment to say thank you to all the men and women who selflessly defend our country. I am forever grateful for your sacrifice. Now onto the shenanigans!

Do you ever finally get to your day off and it just seems like its gone before it even starts? Well, that is pretty much how our 3 day weekend went. Even though it was a long one, we fit a bunch of activities into it! We went fishing (several times, thank you hubby), we went to a local festival, we visited with family, and made some really great burgers on the grill. I hope you all had as much fun as we did!

The first project I wanted to share with you was my wooden palette flag that I made. About a year ago my oldest son moved from a toddler bed into a twin in his own room. We broke his toddler bed down and as we were getting rid of it, I noticed that the slats that held the mattress in place were removable. So long story short, I decided to take the slats and make a palette flag for my front porch. Here is a picture of the flag before paint. I just took one of the slats and cut it in half and used the pieces as the brace to nail the other boards in place.

After I had my flag braced together and ready for paint, I made a trip to our local Walmart (how I long for the days when I will be close enough to drop into a Hobby Lobby or Michaels when I need something). To be honest I wasn't impressed with the selection of crafting supplies but hey, it's Walmart. In our 4 stop light town, it's a miracle our Walmart even has a craft section, so I'm not complaining. Here is what I ended up with:

Overall, the products did what I wanted them too. I chose paint pens for the stars, because I figured it would be easier that way (not exactly true). But, all things considered, everything preformed great. Now, drumroll please, here is my finished product:

It's not perfect, the perfectionist in me knows that (and I'm sure you can see it as well) but, I am pretty proud of it! I didn't use tape or anything, although that would make it easier I'm sure. The only part that irks me are the stars. The paint pens were not as user friendly as I thought they would be. The first time I did the stars, I made too many stars and then when I had the right amount they weren't exactly center. However, Rome wasn't built in a day and considering this is my first little project, I am proud of it!

There are couple other things I wanted to share with you that I did around the house this weekend. Firstly we planted some new flowers in our bed, courtesy of my mother-in-law. She always gives me starts out of her massive flower beds (seriously this woman has a bigger green thumb than the green giant) around mother's day each year. And surprisingly I haven't killed any yet! I blame this on coincidence but hey I will take credit anywhere I can get it. Here is our front porch flower bed after being weeded and mulched:

 I love the red mulch ($1.98 per bag at Walmart), I think it makes the flowers stand out! I didn't stain my hands either surprisingly! Now the last thing I did this weekend, was add some much needed house numbers. Our driveway is hard to find and very long, people miss it or can't find our house a lot of times so I thought some house numbers might help. Here they are all put up (don't judge my hammering skills, still getting the hang of that thing);

And there you have it folks! All my weekend work in a nutshell! Thanks for reading, please leave any suggestions or just general thoughts in the comments, I would love to hear from you! Lastly, I just wanted to leave you with some cute pictures of my biggest (little) fan!

Hope you are all doing well, until next time!
Michelle
